ATS resume checklist: 7 things to verify before applying
An ATS-ready resume is not a keyword dump. It presents job-relevant information in a clear, parseable, and verifiable way. Get the substance right before optimizing the format.
1. Make sure the document is readable
Use a text-based PDF or DOCX with selectable text. Avoid turning the entire resume into an image, hiding information in a background, or relying on decorative icons to convey meaning. A single column, clear headings, and normal reading order are usually safest.
2. Map job language to real experience
Separate required skills, preferred qualifications, and core responsibilities. Then find projects, tools, and outcomes you can truthfully connect to each one. Every important keyword should point to evidence you can explain.
3. Replace vague claims with evidence
Describe the action, context, and observable impact. When a precise metric is unavailable, state the scope, constraint, deliverable, or collaboration involved instead. Do not use numbers you cannot explain in an interview.
